Back To The Crossroads -
The Show

A poetic take on the music of Robert Johnson and the Crossroads legend.

Back To The Crossroads is a show concept Alex McKean (guitarist) had always wanted to explore. Drawing inspiration from his teenage memory of watching the film “Crossroads” (with the soundtrack by Ry Cooder), Alex was inspired to put down his classical viola, pick up a guitar and begin a life long love with blues and the devils music of the deep south.

Before he was 18, Alex spent his Thursday nights sneaking in to watch the Spirit’s Blues Band who were resident at the Woombye Hotel -the home of live blues on the Sunshine Coast at the time.

These men saw the fire in the young  Alex and a strong friendship and mentoring role blossomed. Ian and Greg had a pivotal role in Alex’s career as a guitarist and their collective presence on stage as part of Back to the Crossroads is something truly special to witness.

Upon Alex meeting performance poet, David Knobel and his exceptional talent for the written word as well as live performance, Alex had found a form that created the evocative narrative the show needed to fully explore the music of Robert Johnson and to take the music further on from than where they found it.

With the assistance of Producer, Toni Wills of Peripheral Arts, concept development of the show resulted in its premiere to a sold out audience at Anywhere Theatre Festival in 2017. Based on this success, the show was invited to take part in Horizon Underground Festival 2017 and playing once again to a packed house.

Lewis Elliot has recently joined the show as bass player adding a deeper blues sound to the ensemble of five. In 2018, Back to the Crossroads will play several Brisbane shows and will return as part of the 2018 Anywhere Theatre Festival program in both Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Back to the Crossroads is a transforming show that envokes the traditional blues of old; from slide guitar, to the field holler to the modern touches on the genre. It’s a show that plays with the emotional intensity of the delta blues but in a way that leaves audiences feeling good about themselves and life.

The show is currently scoping opportunities to tour the show across South East Queensland and beyond.
